Article by – Dr. Moe Thit Nay (Ayeyarwaddy Times, October 18) All human beings have experienced pain. The pain of falling and scraping your knee as a child, the pain from an injury or illness as an adult, the pain of aching joints as you age. These are all part of the human experience. Pain is an unavoidable and inseparable experience in human life. Sometimes, even without visible physical wounds, the mind can feel pain. Losing a loved one, encountering war and violence, being displaced from one's homeland, and living amidst uncertainty about the future can cause immense suffering. These pains, though different in form, have a significant impact on human health, emotions, and daily life. What is Pain? According to the definition by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. Simply put, pain is a sensation felt by the body, and it is also a complex and advanced life experience involving the brain and emotions. For example, when you touch a hot iron, immediately pulling your hand away is an automatic protective reflex to the body's pain. The signal that heat can damage body cells and tissues is transmitted through the nervous system to the spinal cord and brain. When the brain interprets these signals in combination with other neural stimuli, it is perceived as pain. Therefore, pain can be a symptom of a disease, and it is also a warning system that protects the body from danger. It is because of pain that the body reacts to avoid further suffering and to move away from the source of pain. Why Do Humans Need Pain?
