NBI Taps Meta to Identify Netizens Mocking Cendaña

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has enlisted the help of Meta to trace individuals behind at least 30 social media accounts that have been mocking the disability and sexual orientation of Akbayan Rep. Percival Cendaña, according to Director Melvin Matibag. This move comes in response to a complaint filed by Cendaña on September 15. Cendaña is a stroke survivor and has openly discussed his sexual orientation. This collaboration highlights the Philippine government's stance against hate speech and personal attacks online. Malicious attacks against public officials can hinder their work and contribute to societal division. Through its partnership with Meta, the NBI aims to identify those responsible for these attacks and take legal action, thereby promoting a healthier online environment. While social media is a primary channel for information in the Philippines, it has also become a breeding ground for disinformation and slander. The cooperation between the NBI and Meta is a step towards strengthening the response to these issues.
