Japan Deploys JSDF to Aid Indonesia's Forest Fire Fight

Japan has provided support through its Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) for handling forest and land fires (Karhutla) in Indonesia, demonstrating concrete actions that realize the strong relationship between the two countries, said Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir. The assistance from the Japanese government to the Republic of Indonesia is a form of humanitarian solidarity and reflects the close friendship and defense cooperation between the two nations, which continues to develop positively. Japan is deploying the JSDF to support aerial firefighting operations (water bombing) in the affected areas. "Japan's support in handling Karhutla in Indonesia reflects that the Indonesian-Japanese defense relationship is not only built through dialogue and institutional cooperation, but also realized through concrete actions when needed," Ambassador Kartini explained. She added, "The spirit of mutual assistance is an important foundation for the increasingly close, trusting and sustainable defense relations between the two countries." The Japanese government's support is being carried out through the deployment of the JS Kunisaki (LST-4003) ship, three CH-47 helicopters belonging to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), and approximately 350 JSDF personnel. The CH-47 helicopters will support fire suppression operations from the air (water bombing) using the Bambi Bucket in the Karhutla-affected areas. The decision to provide assistance was made by the Japanese government on August 28, 2026, following an official request from the Indonesian government. Subsequently, on August 30, 2026, the JS Kunisaki, carrying the three CH-47 helicopters along with personnel and supporting equipment, was dispatched from Japan to Indonesia. Ambassador Kartini further noted that the involvement of the JSDF in supporting Karhutla handling reflects the increasing trust, coordination, and ability to work together between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the JSDF, especially in facing disasters and humanitarian emergencies. This collaboration is expected to make a real contribution to accelerating the handling of Karhutla as well as increasing the readiness of both countries in facing disasters in the future. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to coordinate with the Japanese Ministry of Defense (JMOD), the JSDF, and relevant agencies in both Indonesia and Japan to support the smooth deployment and implementation of the humanitarian mission. This deployment is one of the tangible forms of cooperation in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) between Indonesia and Japan. Cooperation in disaster management is a key area in the defense relations of the two countries, further strengthened by the Indonesia-Japan Defense Cooperation Arrangement (DCA) signed on May 4, 2026.
