Vietnamese Veteran Overcomes Adversity with Unyielding Spirit

In Dong Khoi village, Vinh Long province, southern Vietnam, 76-year-old veteran Nguyen Van Hoang is being recognized for his indomitable spirit in overcoming severe war injuries sustained over 50 years ago. Despite losing both arms and an eye, Hoang has built a family, achieved economic self-sufficiency, and become a model of resilience and a positive outlook on life. Hoang enlisted in 1967 and fought until 1972, participating in over 20 major and minor battles. During a fierce engagement on January 28, 1972, he was hit by enemy fire, resulting in the shattering of both arms and the loss of his right eye. After being evacuated for treatment, doctors had to amputate both his arms above the elbow to save his life. Discharged in late 1973, the young officer returned to his hometown facing immense challenges. At times, he felt his life had ended. However, inspired by President Ho Chi Minh's words to veterans, "Disabled but not useless," he found the motivation to stand up. His greatest support came from his wife, Tran Thi Sai, who herself had lost her left hand in a labor accident at the age of 15. The couple, who met during the war, found strength in each other's shared experiences of disability. After Hoang's severe return, their life together was fraught with hardship. Emerging from the post-war period of scarcity, they began their journey to build a life from a simple thatched-roof house on land still scarred by bomb craters. In the early years after reunification, Hoang, despite having no arms, persevered in his efforts to earn a living. He would repeatedly practice casting a fishing net from the riverbank, eventually mastering the skill. He then spent nearly two years training to grasp and use tools with the remaining stumps of his arms. He learned to wield farming implements, hold buckets, use scissors, and even write. He transformed a barren, overgrown plot of land into fertile rice paddies. Through diligent labor, his family was able to purchase additional land and expand their economic base. The couple was blessed with three children, who were raised with love and care. All three children have grown up and established stable lives. Despite his severe disabilities, Hoang actively participated in local affairs. In 1976, he was elected Secretary of the An Thoi Hamlet Party Cell, a position he held for 16 years. He later served as the head of the Hamlet's Veterans Association until 2015. In every role, he exemplified the "Uncle Ho Soldier" spirit, leading local movements with dedication. Currently, the family's monthly income is approximately 15 million VND (around $600 USD), derived from veteran's benefits and agricultural production. Although advanced age and health issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure have taken their toll, Hoang maintains a positive spirit and remains a pillar of emotional support for his family. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Secretary of the Dong Khoi Commune Party Committee, commented, "For over 50 years, veteran Nguyen Van Hoang has been a shining example of resilience and dedication. He transformed loss and pain into motivation, not only building a happy family but also actively contributing to the locality." His story vividly illustrates the noble qualities of the "Uncle Ho Soldiers" and serves as an educational example of revolutionary tradition for today's youth. More than half a century after the war ended, the scars remain on veteran Nguyen Van Hoang's body. Yet, what resonates more profoundly is his unconquerable will in the face of adversity, his aspiration to live a meaningful life, and his spirit of overcoming fate.
