The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has predicted that volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau will move away from Indonesian territory. This forecast is based on observations made as of 04:00 Western Indonesian Time on September 8, 2026. According to the BMKG, volcanic ash up to an altitude of approximately 1.8 kilometers is moving southwest towards the northern Indian Ocean. However, some ash may still affect air quality and visibility. The BMKG warned that at certain altitudes, flights could be disrupted and urged the public to pay attention to official information. Following the eruption, major airports near Jakarta that were temporarily closed have begun to resume operations. Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang reopened at 00:30 WIB, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at 00:40 WIB, and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung at 00:42 WIB on September 8, 2026. A spokesperson for InJourney Airports stated that airport facilities and operational readiness for air traffic and services are in place to accommodate flights. Before reopening, volcanic ash was cleared from runways, aprons, and taxiways, and runway strength tests were conducted. Heru Karyadi, General Manager of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, explained that operations would be restored gradually, prioritizing safety through the implementation of Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) in the initial phase. Coordination with public transportation providers to support passenger mobility to and from the airport has also been confirmed.
