Vietnam Considers Japan a Long-Term Partner, Boosting Cooperation in Digital and Green Sectors

Vietnam considers Japan a long-term partner and aims to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries. This is part of the efforts to realize the agreements reached during Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's visit to Vietnam in May. Specifically, a policy to promote deeper economic connectivity, enhance economic security, and cooperate in science and technology has been confirmed. In particular, the promotion of concrete joint projects in advanced fields such as digital transformation, green transition, innovation, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence (AI) will be a key focus. The two countries are also enhancing experience sharing in stock market development, which is expected to contribute to the maturation of Vietnam's capital market. Furthermore, exchanges between Vietnamese and Japanese political parties are being deepened through theoretical and policy exchanges, aiming to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership. Under Vietnam's one-party system, economic growth and international cooperation are pillars of the national strategy. Strengthening relations with Japan is also important from the perspective of economic security, and amid increasingly complex relations with China, cooperation with Japan also serves as a safety valve in Vietnam's diplomatic and economic strategy. In recent years, Vietnam has been actively attracting foreign investment, particularly encouraging investment in high-tech industries and green energy sectors. Japan is a long-standing major ODA (Official Development Assistance) provider to Vietnam and a key partner ranking high in foreign direct investment (FDI). This enhanced cooperation builds on these existing relationships to deepen collaboration in new growth areas.
