Cambodia: 144 Dead in July Traffic Accidents; Stricter Enforcement to Resume
Cambodia recorded 208 traffic accidents in July 2026, resulting in 144 fatalities and 245 injuries. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has proposed to the Prime Minister the resumption of strict enforcement of traffic laws starting September 1st.
In the Kingdom of Cambodia, during the full month of July 2026, from the 1st to the 31st, a total of 208 road traffic accidents occurred nationwide, resulting in 144 deaths and 245 people suffering serious and minor injuries. This is according to a report from the Ministry of Interior. According to the report, the traffic accidents were primarily caused by speeding, failure to respect priority, driving on the wrong side of the road, dangerous overtaking, careless turning, driving under the influence of alcohol, non-compliance with traffic signals, and vehicle factors. In the first six months of 2026, traffic accidents have increased compared to 2025, with a surge of 213 cases (equivalent to 20%), 79 fatalities (equivalent to 11%), and 468 injuries (equivalent to 32%). Given the alarming increase in traffic accidents, His Excellency Dr. Sar Sokha, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, and Chairman of the National Road Traffic Safety Committee, has sent a letter to His Excellency Dr. Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, requesting permission to tighten the enforcement of the Law on Road Traffic again, starting from September 1, 2026. In the request letter, His Excellency Dr. Sar Sokha reported to His Excellency the Prime Minister his concerns regarding the increase in traffic accidents following a period where law enforcement across the country was suspended to ease economic burdens on citizens.
