Why Do Good People Choose Silence?

A phenomenon where "good people tend to choose silence" is being pointed out in Indonesian society. This phrase suggests a situation where individuals who should ideally speak out against social injustices or issues instead choose to remain silent. Behind this lies a complex social dynamic where personal safety and stability are prioritized over the risks and costs associated with speaking out publicly. For instance, there's a potential for direct disadvantages, such as losing one's job, damaging interpersonal relationships, or facing legal issues as a consequence of expressing critical opinions. Indonesia is a nation where diverse ethnicities, religions, and cultures coexist, and in some regions, conflicts of opinion can become pronounced. Under such circumstances, many people choosing to live quietly without causing disturbance can be seen as a rational decision. The hurdle of speaking out and taking risks is particularly high for those with unstable economic foundations or those responsible for supporting their families. Furthermore, the spread of social media has increased the risk of individual opinions being instantly disseminated and unexpectedly becoming targets of online backlash or slander. This aspect of a "surveillance society" in the digital space may also contribute to suppressing people's speech. However, the silence of good people can be a loss for the healthy development of society as a whole. Injustice left unchecked and opportunities for improvement missed can exacerbate social problems.
