Cambodia and Philippines Deepen Ties with Focus on Trade and Direct Flights

Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen on Thursday praised the expanding partnership between Cambodia and the Philippines, highlighting a surge in economic cooperation and tourism during a farewell meeting with outgoing Philippine Ambassador H.E. Ms. Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo. During the meeting at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed strong satisfaction with the diplomatic milestones achieved during the ambassador's tenure, voicing confidence that relations between the two ASEAN nations will continue to deepen. Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thyrith noted that Ambassador Mayo highlighted a significant expansion in bilateral relations, driven by high-level diplomatic exchanges. These included the official visit of Philippine President H.E. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Cambodia and Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet’s recent visit to the Philippines—exchanges she noted have solidified political trust between the nations. A core pillar of the conversation centred on trade, particularly Cambodia's growing export market. The Ambassador noted the Philippines’ strong interest in Cambodian agricultural products, expressing hope for a continued rise in imports. Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed this economic momentum, explicitly targeting a boost in Cambodian rice exports to the Philippines. To sustain this growth, he urged both nations to expand direct flight connectivity. "More direct flights will simultaneously facilitate tourism, streamline business activities, and forge stronger people-to-people links," Samdech Techo Hun Sen said, echoing the Ambassador's note that Cambodia has become an increasingly popular destination for Filipino travelers. Beyond bilateral trade, the Senate President briefed Ambassador Mayo on the current Cambodia-Thailand border situation. He reiterated Cambodia's firm stance on resolving all border issues peacefully, relying on international law and established bilateral mechanisms. In response, Ambassador Mayo affirmed that the Philippines will continue to support peaceful resolution efforts regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute.
