Vietnam Urges Proactive Flood Response Amidst Heavy Rains

Vietnam's Ministry of Construction has issued directives to relevant agencies, urging them to proactively implement response plans for major river floods. These directives aim to ensure the safety of transportation, residents, and infrastructure. Currently, multiple rivers in northern and central Vietnam have exceeded flood alert level 3, increasing the risk of inundation and landslides. Specifically, floods on the Hoang Long River in Ninh Binh province have peaked, while water levels on the Day River remain high. In Quang Bi commune, on the outskirts of Hanoi, flood response measures are being implemented along the Bui River. Furthermore, flood alerts have been issued for the Yen River, Buoi River, and Cau Chai River in Thanh Hoa province. In the south, the Dong Nai River is expected to see rising floodwaters, and heavy rainfall in the central region is predicted to prolong and become more complex. In light of these developments, the Ministry of Construction is calling on all regions to closely monitor weather forecasts and establish rapid response systems for flood situations. These actions highlight Vietnam's vulnerability to natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change, even as it pursues rapid economic growth. The impact of flood damage on economic activities and people's lives is significant, particularly in urban areas with ongoing infrastructure development and in agricultural regions. Under Vietnam's one-party system, infrastructure development and disaster response are government-led initiatives. However, strengthening cooperation with local governments and communities is crucial to maximize their effectiveness. In relations with China, issues such as flood control in the Mekong River basin can be a shared concern, suggesting the need for broader regional cooperation.
