Cambodia's Japan-Funded Irrigation and Drainage Project Nears Completion at 99%
A crucial irrigation and drainage system rehabilitation project in southwestern Phnom Penh, funded by Japanese ODA, has reached approximately 99% completion. The initiative is expected to supply water to over 20,000 hectares of farmland, significantly boosting rice yields for numerous farming households.
The rehabilitation and improvement project for the irrigation and drainage system in the southwestern region of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, has reached approximately 99% completion. This project is being implemented with ODA loans from the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and commenced construction on June 13, 2023. On August 4, 2026, H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, visited the project site to inspect its progress. The inspection covered areas spanning Kampong Speu, Kandal, and Takeo provinces. Upon completion, the project is expected to supply irrigation water to over 20,000 hectares of farmland, benefiting 7,925 farming households. This is projected to increase rice yields from 2.2 tons per hectare to 3.8 tons per hectare. Minister Thor Chetha highly praised the progress achieved so far and instructed the construction companies to adhere to technical standards and occupational safety and health, urging them to proceed with the work according to plan. He also requested continued cooperation from all stakeholders for the successful and efficient execution of the project. The main construction works of the project include the repair of the Ruang Chey irrigation facility in Chbar Mon and Samrong Tong districts, Kampong Speu province (1 headwork, 2 water conduits, 2 main canals measuring 11.70 km and 12.60 km respectively, 49 branch canals totaling 26.7 km, and 207 related structures). Additionally, for the Kandal Stueng Bati Dam construction project in Kandal Stueng district, Kandal province, and Bati district, Takeo province, construction includes a small dam (9.40 km), a concrete main canal (4 km), 2 diversion structures, 5 bridges, 11 drainage structures, 3 water intake structures, 1 Kampong Dangkao embankment, and 33 related structures. This project is anticipated to significantly contribute to the improvement of agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of rural communities in Cambodia.
