Mass fish deaths have been discovered along the Sa Lung River in Vinh Linh commune, Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam. Local authorities are investigating the cause. Residents living along the river first noticed the phenomenon on the afternoon of September 8th, reporting that the river water had turned black and emitted an unpleasant odor. A large number of dead fish were found floating on the surface, and some residents collected them for animal feed. Prior to this incident, on September 7th, the Vinh Linh Irrigation Enterprise, which manages the Sa Lung River hydraulic facility and operates under Quang Tri Irrigation Management Co., Ltd., announced it would be opening the sluice gates for water release. The company began releasing water at a flow rate of 10 cubic meters per second from 8 AM on September 8th. Duong Hong Quang, Head of the Economic Department of the Vinh Linh Commune People's Committee, stated that this water release is an annual event. Initial assessments by authorities suggest that the release of water may have stirred up sediment from the riverbed, which flowed downstream and impacted the water quality, leading to the mass fish deaths. However, to determine the definitive cause, the Vinh Linh Commune plans to request a detailed investigation from the Quang Tri Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Environment. Under Vietnam's one-party system, authorities' responses to environmental issues often gain momentum after local residents express concerns. Balancing environmental protection with economic growth remains a critical challenge. In particular, the expansion of infrastructure and hydraulic projects necessitates careful monitoring of their impact on local ecosystems.
