Cambodia-Thailand Border: Military Border Committees Hold Informal Meeting to Ease Tensions
The Cambodia-Thailand Military Border Committees (RBC) held an informal meeting in Oddar Meanchey province to discuss easing tensions and resolving misunderstandings in border areas. Cambodia urged Thailand to cease unilateral land development and cross-border activities, and called for the prompt commencement of joint surveying and demarcation work.
The Military Border Committees (RBC) of Cambodia and Thailand convened for an informal meeting on the morning of July 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at the Choam-Sangam International Checkpoint in Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province. The Cambodian delegation was led by Colonel Nit Narong, Secretary-General of Cambodia's RBC, and the Thai delegation was led by Colonel Kamphanak Waphansoo, Secretary-General of Thailand's RBC. The Cambodian side welcomed the informal operational coordination meeting between the two secretariats, which are held consecutively to discuss and find peaceful solutions to various issues in a timely manner. This aims to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings and reduce tensions along the border. During the meeting, the Cambodian side demanded that the Thai side cease clearing roads, expanding territory, and laying mines within Cambodian sovereign territory and in areas that are not yet demarcated. It also stressed the necessity of commencing the surveying and demarcation work of the Joint Commission on Land Boundary Demarcation (JBC) as soon as possible, in accordance with the existing agreements between the two countries, as stated in the Joint Communiqué of December 27, 2025. Regarding incidents of gunfire and explosions, the Cambodian side proposed that these be verified with the utmost care to prevent misunderstandings and to implement preventive measures to avoid further unnecessary escalation of tensions. Concurrently, the Cambodian side requested the Thai side to cooperate in educating and reinforcing discipline among its frontline forces, with the aim of preventing any actions that could lead to incidents such as gunfire, mine-laying, and the use of inappropriate language. Furthermore, the Cambodian side raised the importance of jointly preventing the spread of fake news that distorts the truth, especially any dissemination that incites hatred and animosity, in order to promote mutual trust and create a favorable environment for peaceful resolution. Once again, the Cambodian side firmly reiterated its commitment to fully and strictly respect and implement the Joint Communiqué of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated December 27, 2025, the Joint Statement on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand dated October 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements, in order to seek peaceful, just, and long-term solutions in accordance with international law, as well as existing treaties and agreements between the two countries.
