Thai Anti-Dam Network Plans Major Protest on Sept 13 Over Wang Tonot Project

An opposition movement against the 7.2 billion baht Wang Tonot Dam construction project is intensifying in Chanthaburi province, central Thailand. The "Wang Tonot Dam Opposition Network" plans to hold a large-scale protest rally in front of the Chanthaburi provincial hall on September 13. Prominent activist Somchit is expected to join the rally to call for an immediate halt to the project. The primary concern of the opposition is the potential submersion of approximately 11,000 rai (about 17.6 square kilometers) of vast forest due to the dam's construction. This area is a habitat for numerous wild animals, with serious impacts on wild elephant habitats being particularly highlighted. It is feared that the loss of forest will increase the risk of wild elephants venturing into nearby communities in search of food and habitat. This project highlights the conflict between environmental protection and development in the local community. Residents are demanding a more detailed explanation from the government and a review of the plan, citing the long-term negative environmental impacts and potential effects on the local economy.
