Ilocos Sur Residents Evacuated Due to Heavy Rains from Southwest Monsoon

Residents in high-risk areas of Ilocos Sur have been ordered to evacuate amid continuous rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, on Sunday, Aug. 9. In an advisory, the provincial government, led by Gov. Jerry Singson, urged residents living near slopes, rivers, low-lying communities, and coastal areas to proceed immediately. This measure aims to ensure the safety of residents as heavy rains continue to affect the region. The Philippines frequently experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, which can lead to landslides and flash floods, particularly in mountainous and riverine areas. Coastal communities are also vulnerable to storm surges and flooding. This evacuation order is likely a precautionary step, considering past disaster experiences in the country.
