Thai PM Orders Accelerated Deportation of Foreigners

Thai Prime Minister Anutin has ordered provincial governors nationwide to accelerate the deportation of foreigners involved in illegal activities or disrespecting local society and culture. Speaking on September 17 regarding the implementation of Interior Ministry policies, the Prime Minister stated, "If you come here, come and earn a living honestly. If you're going to die, go die back home. You don't need to come and die here." This remark follows recent incidents involving some foreigners establishing religious sites without proper government approval. The Prime Minister also ordered a crackdown on foreigners suspected of illegally owning land through Thai nominees, working without permits, or using the country as a base for criminal operations. He dismissed concerns about deportation costs, assuring that the government would cover all expenses. Governors were instructed to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later, ensuring financial constraints do not delay deportations. The Prime Minister argued that deporting offenders is preferable to keeping them in Thailand to serve prison sentences, which consumes public resources. Thailand generally welcomes foreigners to live and work, provided they earn a legal living and respect local society and culture. However, the Prime Minister's recent remarks suggest a tightening stance on the behavior of some foreign nationals. While Vietnam, under its one-party system, typically maintains strict regulations on foreign activities and such broad public pronouncements might be less common, the increasing influx of foreigners accompanying economic growth can present social challenges in any nation.
