ASEAN's Data Center Boom Puts Sustainability Goals to the Test

The rapid expansion of data centers across the ASEAN region, particularly in Thailand, is highlighting challenges in achieving sustainability goals. Data centers are experiencing a construction boom across ASEAN due to the explosive growth in demand for information processing power and data storage, driven by increasing digitalization. While the Thai government has policies promoting a transition to renewable energy, the pace is not keeping up with the immense power demands of data centers. Experts are strongly urging data center operators to adopt more energy-efficient technologies and procure power from renewable sources like solar energy. This situation suggests that while ASEAN benefits from its digital economy, neglecting environmental considerations carries the risk of undermining long-term sustainability.
