Authorities also arrested an Australian woman who allegedly overstayed in the Philippines for nine years while working at a hotel in Siargao. A Lithuanian national was found allegedly managing a resort and working as a food delivery rider without the required permits, while a Nigerian national was accused of illegally working as a dog trainer. The bureau said two overstaying Chinese nationals, who were already in BI’s blacklist, were also arrested. A Moroccan national was likewise taken into custody after being classified as an undesirable alien following an earlier arrest on criminal charges. All 10 foreigners will undergo deportation proceedings and will be transferred to the bureau’s detention facility in Manila pending the resolution of their immigration cases. The operation comes about a month after the BI stepped up immigration monitoring in Siargao following complaints from local government officials and residents about foreigners allegedly overstaying, working without permits, and committing other violations on the island. The bureau earlier said it would strengthen coordination with local authorities and increase enforcement operations in one of the country’s busiest tourist destinations.
