Kampong Thom Women's Affairs Dept Holds Forum on Gender and Eye Health

The Department of Women's Affairs in Kampong Thom, Cambodia, organized an educational forum on gender and eye health at Potirachsetharam Pagoda (Andout Pagoda) in Andout village, Bak Sna commune, Baray district. The event, held in collaboration with the Department of Women and Health of the Ministry of Women's Affairs, the Provincial Department of Health, and local authorities, was supported by the Fred Hollows Foundation. The forum was presided over by Ms. Suu Pharin, Deputy Director of the Kampongthom Provincial Department of Women's Affairs, and attended by representatives from the Ministry of Women's Affairs, the Baray District Social Affairs and Well-being Office, Kampong Thom Provincial Referral Hospital, and 223 residents (145 women) from the community. The forum aimed to provide citizens with knowledge about gender and eye health, and to offer free eye examinations and treatments on-site for conditions such as cataracts, pterygium, and other eye diseases. Ms. Suu Pharin discussed gender concepts and the roles of men and women in contemporary society, noting the increased participation of women in government at all levels. She emphasized the importance of regular eye check-ups to detect and treat conditions like cataracts, pterygium, red eyes, glaucoma, and infections, urging timely medical attention. She also highlighted the government's commitment to addressing the difficulties faced by citizens. Furthermore, Ms. Pharin addressed the rise in infant mortality in 2025, encouraging pregnant women to attend regular prenatal check-ups and promoting good hygiene. She also warned about the increase in dengue fever during the rainy season and advised on preventive measures and prompt treatment.
