Quadruple Amputee Rebuilds Life with Love and Hope

Pham Quyet Thang, 45, from Thai Nguyen Province, has built a life filled with love and hope, overcoming the tragedy of losing all four limbs in an electrical accident 21 years ago. In 2005, while working at a construction site, Thang accidentally touched a high-voltage power line, causing him to fall six meters and fall into a month-long coma. Upon regaining consciousness, he learned that both his arms and legs had been amputated to save his life. Several more surgeries followed to stop the damage caused by severe electrical burns. After four months in the hospital, Thang returned home completely dependent on his family. His mother fed him, while his father and older brother assisted him with bathing and using the toilet. Initially, he struggled to accept his reality and spent his days in despair. However, his mother's words, "As long as you're alive, we'll find a way," marked a turning point. "If I survived, I had to keep living. Even if I could never repay my parents, I didn't want to become their lifelong burden," Thang recalled. After his wounds healed, he began the arduous journey of learning to stand again. Without arms for balance, he relied entirely on his parents' support during months of rehabilitation. Despite falling and reopening wounds, he was able to stand on his own after six months. Two years later, Thang opened a small roadside stall outside his home selling mobile SIM cards and prepaid vouchers. While initial earnings were meager, he saw an opportunity in Vietnam's rapidly expanding mobile phone market. With his father's help, he expanded the business into a regional telecommunications dealership, which not only allowed him to support his family but also repay nearly VND1 billion (approximately $40,000) borrowed for his medical treatment. Financial independence gave Thang the confidence to build his own family. In 2009, he met Duong Thi Thoa, who would become his wife. Despite initial opposition from some relatives, he won the support of Thoa's mother and older sister and they married. Four years later, they welcomed two children. In 2011, with the help of prosthetics, Thang took his first steps. Today, he can walk two kilometers independently. His children also help care for him. In recent years, as demand for SIM cards declined, Thang sought new income streams. Using PVC pipes, he created simple prosthetic attachments that allow him to hold spoons, forks, and cooking tools. Videos of him cooking with these homemade attachments have garnered millions of views on social media, creating a new source of income through online sales. Recently, he prepared a meal for his wife and children to celebrate his 45th birthday and their 17th wedding anniversary. He likened himself to a penguin that survives by adapting and expressed his deep love for his family. "I may not have arms to hold you, but I promise to use my mind, my heart, and everything I have to protect you and our family," he told his wife.
