PT MRT Jakarta is preparing for a large-scale revitalization of the Blok M area in South Jakarta. Targeting construction to begin in 2027 and conclude by late 2028 or early 2029, the plan includes vertical development for offices and residences, alongside 'placemaking' concepts blending youth culture with nostalgia to enhance the district's appeal.

PT MRT Jakarta is currently preparing a plan for the revitalization of the Blok M area in South Jakarta. This initiative aims not only to improve existing areas but also to develop vertical structures with potential functions ranging from offices to residences and apartments. R. Samuel Ryan Pradipta Pranowo, Division Head of Business Planning and Expansion at PT MRT Jakarta, stated that the revitalization plan is still in the discussion phase. The development is targeted to commence in 2027 and be completed by late 2028 or early 2029. "Blok M is currently underground and at ground level. Our plan is indeed to expand upwards, vertically. Above that, there can be offices, residential areas, apartments, and so on," Samuel explained during the MRT Jakarta Fellowship Program 2026 on Wednesday (9/9/2026). For funding, MRT Jakarta is open to collaborating with investors or private partners, a scheme expected to reduce reliance on the regional government budget. "This is still in the planning stage, most likely from the MRT budget. But we also hope that there will be private partners, investors who can participate in the development, so not everything has to come from the DKI Jakarta budget," he said. The revitalization of Blok M will also encompass the Transjakarta Terminal. The arrangement will focus on increasing capacity and passenger comfort, including through the addition of bus lanes and more protected waiting areas. "Later, there will be more bus lanes, and the waiting area will also be more protected from heat and rain," Samuel noted. He further elaborated that the development of the Blok M area is not solely focused on physical construction. MRT Jakarta is also incorporating the concept of 'placemaking,' which involves creating an area with activities, character, and spaces for the community to gather and interact. This concept is part of an effort to make Blok M more than just a transit area. Samuel stated that Blok M's character will maintain its elements of youth culture and nostalgia, making it enjoyable for all generations. "So, we are indeed trying to give Blok M a soul. We want it to have culture, urban youth culture, but also nostalgia. So that young people can enjoy it, and older people can also enjoy it," he said. Additionally, various themed activities will continue to be presented to maintain Blok M's appeal to visitors. As of September 2026, MRT Jakarta has collaborated with over 50 communities in Blok M, ranging from hobby and sports communities to social and religious activities. Samuel further conveyed that Martha Tiahahu Literacy Park is one of the spaces considered instrumental in changing the area's face. This public space serves as a starting point for developing activities in Blok M and has contributed to enhancing the area's image. "I think the Literacy Park is the starting point of Blok M's success. Because previously, Blok M's image was dim, now the Literacy Park is open 24 hours, people can come, read, and engage in activities," he remarked. Information Source: Liputan6
