Elite Bali Running Club Faces Backlash Over Alleged Indonesian Exclusion

A running club in Bali, reportedly comprised of foreign nationals, is facing widespread criticism and accusations of discriminating against Indonesian citizens. The group, active in the Canggu area of North Bali, is alleged to be hindering local runners and causing disruptions to public road users. Screenshots of chat conversations shared on social media reveal complaints from local residents who claim they were repeatedly denied entry when attempting to join the club. While foreign applicants reportedly gain quick approval, Indonesian nationals allegedly face difficulties and are ignored. The issue has intensified with strong suspicions that the club's membership selection process is based on nationality. Beyond accusations of discrimination, the group's activities have also drawn scrutiny for frequently occupying public roads, leading to traffic congestion. Josh Fothergill, a runner from the UK, stated in a social media post, "There is a running club in Bali that does not allow Indonesians to join. We are making this video because it is time to speak up for what is right." Other foreign runners have echoed similar sentiments, condemning the exclusion of locals as an abuse of power and urging the foreign running community to change their behavior or cease their activities. The controversy has prompted intervention from a member of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) from Bali, who has called for swift action from law enforcement and immigration authorities. Local government has been urged to investigate the legality of the club's operations and take firm action against any problematic foreign nationals. "We request the Bali Immigration Office and the Bali Provincial Police to follow up on our report regarding alleged discrimination by foreign nationals and activities that are suspected to be without permits. To the foreign nationals who do not accept the membership of Indonesian citizens, you are doing this in Bali, this is our homeland," said Ni Luh Djelantik, a DPD RI member from Bali.
