Cambodian Police Officer Dies After Attack During Anti-Drug Operation

A deputy police chief in Kampong Cham province has died from severe injuries sustained during an anti-drug operation, after being attacked by a perpetrator with a sharp weapon. The incident has highlighted growing concerns over youth delinquency and public safety in the region. The deceased, Warrant Officer Mab Sophath, 58535, who served as the deputy chief of the anti-drug department at the Steung Trang District Police Inspectorate, passed away on August 8th at his home in Kumpong Cham province. His Excellency Oun Chanda, the provincial governor, along with several colleagues, paid their respects at his residence in Khum Khtum Taingoun, Steung Trang District. This marks an unprecedented event during a crackdown on delinquent youth. According to Ban Sreng, the governor of Steung Trang District, the suspect who attacked the deputy police chief was a drug-addicted individual living alone. His parents reportedly rented a separate house due to fear of their son's violent behavior. Recalling the incident, the group of delinquent youths had been engaged in a brawl at a Kun Khmer boxing event in Boeung Daek 1 village, Prek Kkok commune, Steung Trang district. When police intervened, Warrant Officer Mab Sophath was critically injured by a sharp instrument to his face and head, suffering from severe cranial bleeding. He was initially sent for treatment in Vietnam. Mr. Mab Sophath had been leading a patrol in the Prek Kkok commune on the night of April 24th when they were alerted to a fight among a group of young people at a Kun Khmer boxing event broadcast by Town Television. Upon arrival and intervention, a suspect used a sharp object to stab him multiple times in the nose area near the eye, causing severe injuries and rendering him unconscious. The suspect, identified as Hy Naiy, alias Khney, a 31-year-old male residing in Boeung Daek village, Prek Kkok commune, Steung Trang district, was apprehended at the scene. A drug test on the suspect yielded negative results. Following the attack, Warrant Officer Mab Sophath was taken to the district referral hospital and then transferred to Phnom Penh for further treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, including a blood clot in the brain, he was transported to Vietnam for advanced medical care. Reports from April 26th indicated that surgeons had successfully removed the blood clot, and his condition was being closely monitored. After over a month of treatment in Vietnam without significant improvement, he was brought back to Cambodia and later admitted to a hospital in Phnom Penh. His condition continued to deteriorate, leading to his return home on August 7th, where he passed away at 1:30 PM, leaving behind a five-year-old daughter. The Steung Trang District Governor confirmed that he and the Provincial Police Commissioner had visited the victim's family in Vietnam, providing financial assistance from the district police, provincial police, and provincial administration. The deceased received significant attention from local authorities, the provincial governor, and the Ministry of Interior. Despite extensive medical efforts, including surgery in Vietnam and subsequent treatment in Phnom Penh, his condition did not improve.
