Minority Solons Urge Swift Reforms Following South Cotabato School Shooting

Minority lawmakers in the Philippines' House of Representatives are calling on the government to swiftly implement comprehensive reforms to prevent school shootings, following a recent attack at a national high school in South Cotabato that left three students dead and several others wounded. In separate statements, Akbayan party-list Representatives Chel Diokno and Percival Cendaña highlighted that the tragedy underscores the gaps in school safety protocols and the laxity in regulating access to firearms. They argued for stricter enforcement of Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, particularly concerning the sale and transfer of firearms to minors. The representatives also emphasized the need for enhanced mental health support within schools and improved communication channels among students, faculty, and parents. Establishing mechanisms to detect early warning signs of distress or suspicious behavior among students is also considered urgent. The incident has once again brought to the forefront the pressing issue of ensuring safety within educational institutions across the Philippines. The lawmakers are urging the government to formulate a concrete action plan and enact swift, effective reforms to prevent future tragedies.
