Lao Cai Province Proactively Responds to Heavy Rains, Flash Floods, and Landslides

Lao Cai Province in northern Vietnam is strengthening its response to potential natural disasters, particularly heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides. The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee has issued urgent directives to relevant departments, members of the Provincial Civil Defense Steering Committee, and the People's Committees of districts and communes to rapidly and intensively implement preventive and response measures to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. These directives aim to minimize damage in the event of disasters, taking into account the specific characteristics of Lao Cai Province, which is largely mountainous and geographically vulnerable to natural hazards. In the past, Lao Cai has experienced significant damage from flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall. The province is advancing comprehensive disaster preparedness through the development of evacuation plans, enhancement of early warning systems, inspection and reinforcement of infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns. Emergency support for disaster victims and livelihood assistance for displaced residents are also being provided. Furthermore, Lao Cai Province regularly conducts civil defense drills to improve its disaster response capabilities. These drills involve the military and related agencies, focusing on confirming coordination mechanisms and practicing rapid recovery operations in simulated disaster scenarios. These efforts demonstrate the provincial government's commitment to ensuring public safety under the directives of the central government within Vietnam's one-party system.
