Chinese Fugitive Arrested in Pattaya for Billion-Baht Money Laundering Operation
Thai police have arrested a major Chinese fugitive, identified as Mr. Yu (31), who was hiding in the resort city of Pattaya. He led a criminal organization since 2018 specializing in money laundering for online gambling sites, moving approximately one billion baht illegally.
PATTAYA – Thai police have arrested Mr. Yu, a 31-year-old Chinese national wanted in China, who was found to be hiding in the resort city of Pattaya. He was apprehended in a housing estate in the Bang Lamung district. According to police reports, Mr. Yu established a criminal organization known as PAOFENG in 2018. This group acted as a trusted intermediary for overseas online gambling websites, facilitating the secure and rapid concealment and transfer of illicit funds. The organization employed over 60 lower-level members and managed more than 6,000 digital payment accounts, primarily using popular applications like Alipay and WeChat to collect gambling proceeds. Furthermore, the group utilized advanced financial technologies, particularly cryptocurrencies, to conduct large-scale money transfers across international borders, making their transactions nearly undetectable by conventional banking investigation networks. While initially challenging to trace, persistent cyber investigations eventually led authorities to Mr. Yu's hideout in Thailand. The total amount of illicit funds moved by the organization is reported to be approximately one billion Thai baht. Following his arrest, Mr. Yu admitted to being a fugitive from China and confessed to hiding in Thailand. He is currently in the custody of Thai immigration officials, with legal procedures underway for his extradition to China. This arrest highlights the cooperative efforts between Thailand and China in combating international crime and serves as a warning to individuals seeking to use Thailand as a refuge for criminal activities. Thailand is committed to strengthening its measures against transnational criminal organizations. Source: Chiang Rai Times
