Chiang Rai Gold Robbers Flee Toward China Border After Mall Heist

CHIANG RAI – Two armed men from Laos executed a massive gold robbery in northern Thailand earlier this week. The shocking crime happened at a popular shopping mall located in Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai. The bold thieves managed to escape with millions of baht in stolen gold and jewelry. The robbers targeted the famous Yaowarat Bangkok gold shop inside a busy Tesco Lotus branch. They aggressively threatened the terrified staff members with a loaded handgun during the fast-paced raid. According to recent MGR Online news reports, the criminals quickly swept up 13 million baht worth of gold. The entire robbery took the armed suspects less than ten minutes from start to finish. They stuffed heavy gold necklaces and rings into a large backpack before fleeing the scene. Next, the thieves rode a rented motorcycle directly to the nearby banks of the Mekong River. The suspects abandoned the getaway bike and boarded a waiting wooden boat on the river. They quickly crossed the natural border into Huay Xai, which is located in Bokeo Province, Laos. After changing their clothes, the men drove a Toyota Camry directly toward the Chinese border. Regional police officials have successfully traced the suspects’ escape route through the neighboring Southeast Asian country. The two men traveled north to Luang Namtha Province, which sits about 200 kilometers away. One man originally entered Thailand legally, while his partner waited nearby with the escape boat. The local provincial court officially issued arrest warrants for the two identified Lao national suspects. The wanted suspects are named as Khamthid Phonprasid, 28, and his partner Somchai Thipwan, 32. Thai law enforcement authorities are now working very closely with Lao police to capture them. Police officers strongly urge local border businesses to remain on extremely high alert right now. Shops near international crossings face unique security challenges because criminals can escape the country very quickly. Catching the fleeing thieves would certainly be much easier if they had remained inside Thailand.
