Two Boys Severely Injured by Unexploded Ordnance in Cambodia

Two boys, aged 14 and 5, have suffered severe injuries in an explosion involving unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Kamyen district, Battambang province, western Cambodia. The incident underscores the persistent dangers posed by leftover explosives from past conflicts. The accident occurred on September 11 in Kamprong village, Takrey commune. The boys reportedly found a 60mm caliber explosive device and were playing with it near a kitchen when it detonated. The 14-year-old sustained the loss of fingers on both hands, while the 5-year-old suffered a serious head injury. Local authorities stated that the cause of the explosion was the children's unawareness of the dangers associated with the unexploded ordnance. Cambodia is known to have a significant number of UXOs scattered across the country due to past conflicts, leading to numerous civilian casualties annually. Children are particularly vulnerable to such accidents. Following the incident, authorities have issued a strong warning to the public, especially children, urging them to stay away from UXOs and other explosive remnants. They are advised to report any suspicious objects immediately to the police or relevant experts without attempting to handle them. The Cambodian government has been engaged in demining and UXO clearance efforts for many years.
