Cambodia Grapples with Fake News, Citizens' Awareness Grows Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Fake news continues to be a significant challenge in Cambodia, with the Ministry of Information stating that the trend has not yet shown signs of decline. Minister Net Pheaktra, speaking on September 17, 2026, after a forum on combating fake news and the 2026 content creator awards competition held in Phnom Penh, noted that while the issue persists, a growing number of Cambodian citizens are becoming more aware and even participating in prevention efforts. According to Minister Net Pheaktra, some fake news originates from Cambodians living abroad who create and disseminate false information for political or economic gain. The Ministry of Information is actively labeling all inflammatory and false content, urging the public not to share it, and in some cases, removing it entirely to prevent further viewing. "The Ministry of Information is working hard to educate the public so that citizens have correct knowledge and can jointly prevent this type of dangerous information," the Minister stated. He added, "In the past, the Ministry of Information has launched many campaigns, focusing on students because many of them use mobile phones. We must ensure that young people who use mobile phones use them beneficially and for their studies. In addition, they must pay attention not to fall for fake news, which is a danger to them." Regarding individuals who spread fake news, Minister Net Pheaktra emphasized that while freedom of expression is a right, disseminating content that incites hatred, causes social unrest, defames others, or violates the law will face legal consequences. He recalled that the ministry has received complaints from individuals whose reputations have been harmed and has taken action to resolve these issues. "Therefore, the ministry must summon journalists who have problems to educate them and resolve issues with the victims," the Minister stated. "For those who are severely affected, such as those whose national security is impacted by providing images of military activities to foreign aggressors, this is espionage. Therefore, the Ministry has taken legal action."
