Palace Warns of Legal Action Over Pumping Station Parts Theft

The Presidential Palace has condemned the theft of critical components from Metro Manila's pumping stations, warning that perpetrators will face sanctions for sabotaging government flood-mitigation infrastructure. In a video statement on Monday, Palace Press Officer Clarissa A. Castro said the theft of parts has disrupted the operations of several pumping stations across Metro Manila. This comes as the capital and neighboring provinces experience heavy rain due to recent tropical cyclones and an enhanced southwest monsoon. “This is saddening because the President, DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways), MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority), and other agencies are doing everything to alleviate the flood problem,” Ms. Castro said in Filipino, noting that while functional stations have accelerated flood recession, these thefts jeopardize public safety. “But because of the stolen valuable parts of the pumping stations, they will not work,” Ms. Castro said. “We will spend again for these replacements. What if we cannot secure a replacement immediately? Lives, health, and property are affected because of these thefts.” “To all those committing this sabotage, the law will pursue you. We will hold you accountable, because lives and livelihoods can be affected by your selfish actions,” she asserted.
