Angat Dam Water Level Recovers Above Minimum Operating Level

The water level of Angat Dam, a primary water source for Metro Manila, has risen to 201.91 meters above sea level (masl), surpassing its minimum operating level of 180 masl. This marks a recovery after months of decline attributed to the El Niño phenomenon. The reservoir had previously dropped to a historic low of 150.42 masl on July 25, following the onset of El Niño impacts in June. El Niño is known to increase the likelihood of drier-than-normal conditions in parts of the country, potentially triggering droughts and dry spells, while also leading to fewer but possibly stronger tropical cyclones. Sustained rains, including those brought by the southwest monsoon (habagat) and other tropical weather systems, have contributed to the increase in Angat Dam's water level. The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) stated that its concessionaires, Manila Water Co., Inc. and Maynilad Water Services, Inc., will continue to monitor the situation and implement contingency measures to complement the rising reservoir levels. The water companies are currently focused on developing additional and alternative water sources, improving operational efficiency, and safeguarding supply ahead of the projected dry season. MWSS is also actively coordinating with various national government agencies and local government units to ensure the proper implementation of these measures and the management of water allocations. MWSS further highlighted the importance of intelligent water use, such as checking for leaks, reusing water for non-potable purposes, and mindful consumption, in managing supply. The regulator encouraged everyone to continue making water conservation a daily habit to ensure a sustainable and resilient water supply for all as the country navigates the El Niño period.
