Cambodia Signs MoU to Develop Agriculture on Demined Land

A significant collaboration has been established in Cambodia aimed at promoting the agricultural use of demined land and improving the living standards of local communities. On July 28, 2026, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Minister Dit Tina and Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in agricultural development. Minister Dit Tina highly praised the efforts of the mine authority over the past 30 years in clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance. He stated that this work has transformed dangerous land into safe agricultural fields, laying the foundation for farmers to engage in agriculture, increase their income, and improve the lives of local communities. The minister also expressed gratitude for Cambodia's transformation from a war-torn nation to one of peace and security under the leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen and current Prime Minister Hun Manet, as well as for the support from development partners and friendly nations. Senior Minister Ly Thuch, in turn, affirmed the mine authority's continued commitment to clearing landmines and war remnants, prioritizing "safety." He emphasized that this contributes to ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and maintaining social stability. Furthermore, he reiterated Cambodia's determination to completely clear all landmines by 2030. This initiative is expected to enable farmers to cultivate their crops without fear, ensuring their safety and supporting sustainable agricultural development that connects farmland to markets. Senior Minister Ly Thuch concluded by expressing his renewed gratitude to development partners and friendly countries for their technical and financial support. He highly commended the signing of this MoU as an implementation of proactive and determined joint efforts to transition from fear to agricultural yields. This MoU represents a crucial first step in a concrete action plan as Cambodia strives to overcome the legacy of its prolonged conflict and pursue sustainable development and improved livelihoods for its citizens.
