Philippines Bolsters Leptospirosis Preparedness with Bed Capacity and Drug Supply

The Department of Health (DOH) has ensured 602 available beds for leptospirosis patients in 20 DOH-retained hospitals in Metro Manila as of September 3, 2026. This total bed capacity includes 260 additional surge beds. As of the report on Monday, 562 beds are currently occupied by admitted patients. The DOH continues to refer and redistribute patients to hospitals with available capacity, especially those requiring dialysis and other higher-level care. To combat the spread of leptospirosis, the agency is augmenting the supply of doxycycline capsules in affected regions. As of September 4, 1,204,200 capsules have been distributed to affected areas. Additionally, 2,624,089 capsules are available across Centers for Health Development, and 40,812 capsules are stocked in DOH-retained hospitals and medical centers within Metro Manila. The DOH is actively monitoring and redistributing these stocks based on exposure risk and localized demand. Between August 2 and 15, a total of 824 leptospirosis cases were logged. This represents a significant 77% increase compared to the 465 cases recorded from July 19 to August 1. The DOH is closely monitoring SOCCSKSARGEN, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Cordillera Administrative Region, Negros Island Region, Bicol Region, and Cagayan Valley due to an increase in leptospirosis cases compared to last year's records. Furthermore, Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Northern Mindanao, and Davao Region are under heightened surveillance after reaching the epidemic threshold twice in the past four weeks. For the year 2026, a total of 6,253 leptospirosis cases have been recorded, which is 12% lower than the 7,084 cases recorded in the same period in 2025. The DOH is coordinating with local government units for the screening and provision of prophylaxis to individuals exposed to floodwaters, as well as for the augmentation and redistribution of necessary medicines and supplies. Leptospirosis is an infection caused by bacteria found in the urine of infected animals, such as rats. Symptoms can range from fever, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue to severe, potentially fatal disease. The bacteria can enter the body through fresh wounds or via the mouth, nose, or eyes, often through contact with contaminated water or soil. —RF, GMA News
