LTFRB Seeks Comelec Exemption for Subsidy Programs Amid Spending Ban

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to exempt from the government spending ban some of its programs, including the fuel subsidy for public transport drivers and Edsa busway “Libreng Sakay” (free rides). According to the transport regulatory body, LTFRB acting Chair Greg Pua, the programs are crucial for drivers and commuters. "It’s crucial for us to continue these programs, especially the fuel subsidy for our drivers who are facing rising fuel prices," Pua said. The "Libreng Sakay" program, which provides free rides to commuters along the Edsa busway, is also a vital service for many Filipinos. "We understand the purpose of the spending ban during election periods, but we believe these programs are essential public services that should not be halted," Pua added.
