Cambodia Forecasts Widespread Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Over Weekend

The Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) reported on September 25, 2026, that widespread rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected across Cambodia over the weekend. This forecast is based on meteorological information released by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. According to the report, approximately 70% of Cambodia is expected to experience unstable weather conditions from September 25th to 27th. This is attributed to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon, which is influencing the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, South China Sea, Mekong River basin, and Cambodian waters. However, Tropical Depression Surigae (T2626) is not expected to directly impact the country. Specific forecasts for different regions are as follows: In the lowland areas (including Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Prey Veng, Siem Reap, Svay Rieng, Takeo, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Thom, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, and Banteay Meanchey), minimum temperatures are predicted to be 25°C and maximums 33°C. Winds from the southwest and northwest will blow at an average speed of 3 meters per second, with 70% of these areas likely to see thunderstorms and gusty winds. For the plateau regions (including Kampong Speu, Pailin, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, the Dangrek Mountains, and the Cardamom Mountains), minimum temperatures are forecast to be 24°C and maximums 31°C. Winds from the southwest and west will average 5 meters per second, with 70% of these areas also expected to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds. Along the coast (including Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and the Bokor Mountains), minimum temperatures will be 25°C and maximums 34°C. Winds from the southwest and southeast will average 3 meters per second, with 60% of these coastal areas anticipating thunderstorms and gusty winds. Sea waves are expected to range from 0.50 to 1.75 meters in height. This weather information could affect Cambodia's agriculture, fisheries, and the daily lives of its citizens. Gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms may pose risks to infrastructure and raise safety concerns.
