Explosions Near DOJ, Senate Raise Security Concerns on SONA Day

MANILA, Philippines – Two security incidents were reported just outside two government institutions on the day of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27: an explosion near the entrance of the Department of Justice (DOJ) building and, hours later, a suspected improvised explosive device found near the Senate gate. At around 12:17 am on Monday, July 27, an explosion, believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device, was reported near the DOJ entrance along Padre Faura Street in Ermita, Manila. “Investigation is ongoing to determine the source, nature, and circumstances surrounding the explosion,” the DOJ said in a statement. “The situation is currently under control, and the DOJ compound remains secure. The DOJ remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and the general public, while supporting a comprehensive and impartial investigation,” it added. Hours later, at 8 am, a suspected improvised explosive device was found about 150 meters from the Senate gate, according to Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Alfred Corpuz. The Senate opened the second regular session of the 20th Congress at 10 am that day. The suspected explosive device was concealed inside a biscuit box with wires, brown powder, a battery, and a clock. The suspicious package has been turned over to the Philippine National Police Scene of the Crime Operatives (PNP SOCO) for examination. “We condemn in the strongest terms this apparent attempt to sow fear near the Senate on the very day our institutions gather for the State of the Nation Address,” Senate President Win Gatchalian said. Gatchalian called on the PNP to conduct a thorough investigation to determine who was responsible and what they intended to achieve.
