Cambodia's Central Bank Tightens AML/CFT Measures to Combat Cybercrime
The National Bank of Cambodia has announced an intensified crackdown on money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT) to combat cybercrime and preserve the integrity of the financial system. Financial institutions are urged to enhance vigilance and cooperation with relevant authorities.
The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) is tightening its oversight of anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT) measures to combat cybercrime and maintain the integrity of the nation's financial system. This initiative will subject all supervised banks and financial institutions to more stringent scrutiny. During the first half of 2026 performance review meeting held on July 27, 2026, Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the NBC, stated that these strengthened measures are in line with the government's efforts to eradicate cybercrimes and uphold the reputation of Cambodia's banking system, while also fulfilling its obligations as a member of the global financial community. Financial institutions are required to enhance their vigilance against money laundering and terrorist financing activities. In this regard, the NBC will continue to collaborate closely with relevant ministries and institutions, including the Financial Intelligence Unit of Cambodia, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, and the Committee for Combating Cybercrime. This cooperation aims to ensure timely and effective actions against illicit activities. Furthermore, Dr. Serey emphasized the growing importance of international cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, in the current geopolitical landscape. Alongside efforts to promote financial integration and cooperation among ASEAN and ASEAN+3 member countries, the NBC has been selected to host the 28th Conference of Central Bank Governors of French-speaking countries (CBA-OP), bringing together central banks from 26 countries representing 44 nations. This event presents an opportunity to showcase Cambodia's economic and financial development, its culture, and to further enhance its international standing. Article by: Sam Oeur
