Proboscis Monkeys: The Forgotten Architects of Borneo's Mangrove Ecosystems
The proboscis monkey (Bekantan), endemic to Borneo, plays a crucial role in maintaining mangrove forests with its unique appearance. Their feeding habits shape forest structure and promote regeneration.
The proboscis monkey (Bekantan, Nasalis larvatus), endemic to the island of Borneo, is a primate known for its distinctive long nose and somewhat large belly. Behind its humorous appearance, however, the bekantan plays a crucial role as a primary "architect" in nurturing Borneo's lush mangrove forests. Bekantan inhabit mangrove forests, peat swamps, and riparian forests along rivers. They are highly selective about their living spaces, prioritizing the availability of rivers, tall trees for sleeping, and an abundance of food such as young leaves, fruits, and mangrove bark. Their survival is thus deeply dependent on the quality of wetland ecosystems, including mangrove forests and freshwater swamps along river flows. As a herbivore that consumes leaves and fruits, the bekantan bites, trims, and chews mangrove leaves daily. This intensive feeding behavior gradually alters the forest's canopy structure, influences new branch growth patterns, and even shifts the competition among mangrove tree species for sunlight. The bekantan's role as an "ecosystem architect" is most evident in its feeding habits. They consume leaves and seeds from dozens of mangrove tree species, including Rhizophora, Bruguiera, and Sonneratia. This seemingly simple feeding process has significant ecological consequences for forest regeneration. Previous research, notably a scientific study titled "Seed dispersal by proboscis monkeys: the case of Nauclea spp," specifically demonstrated that seeds consumed and excreted by proboscis monkeys have a significantly higher germination success rate. This suggests that proboscis monkeys not only consume food but also act as seed dispersers, contributing to the diversity and sustainability of mangrove forests. However, the bekantan, along with their mangrove forest habitat, faces threats such as development and habitat destruction. Increased recognition of their vital role in maintaining the overall health of Borneo's ecosystem is expected to drive conservation efforts.
