US-China Summit: AI and Trade Truce Extension in Focus, Limited Impact on Vietnam Expected

The US-China summit has seen the AI arms race and the extension of the trade truce emerge as key discussion points. The meeting began with an unusual welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping, with former US President Donald Trump greeting him at the airport, underscoring its significance. During the talks, the intensifying competition for leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) was highlighted, with China viewing AI as a tool for enhancing national power. While the US holds an advantage in cutting-edge AI models, China is focused on developing open-source models and broad economic applications. US export controls on advanced semiconductors remain a constraint on China's AI development. However, China is seeking to increase its presence in the AI sector by leveraging its low electricity costs and strengths in robot manufacturing. On the trade front, the US and China have agreed to extend their trade truce agreement until January 2027. This involves a reduction in tariffs on certain goods in exchange for China easing restrictions on rare earth exports. However, there are also concerns that China has not fully met its previous commitments regarding agricultural purchases and rare earth supplies. From Vietnam's perspective, the direct impact of this US-China summit on its economy is likely to be limited. Vietnam has been attracting investment from both countries and diversifying its supply chains as a "middle ground" amidst US-China tensions. However, if trade friction between the US and China eases and cooperation in the AI field progresses, indirect effects on the restructuring of global supply chains and technology transfer cannot be ruled out. Specifically, the development of AI technology could influence automation and efficiency in Vietnam's manufacturing and IT sectors. Furthermore, the trade truce extension could contribute to the economic stability of both the US and China, markets on which Vietnam relies for exports. On the other hand, as long as the US-China technology race continues, Vietnam will continue to need a strategy to advance its own technological development and industrial growth while maintaining a balance in its relations with both powers.
