Cambodian Durian Exports to International Markets Expand, Boosting Employment

Durian produced in Pailin province, western Cambodia, is expanding its exports to meet strong international market demand. According to a report by the local media "Koh Santepheap Khmer," in July, "Chai Na Jin Yuan Yi Import Company" from China purchased durians from farmers in Pailin and Battambang provinces, exporting 613.41 tons overseas during the month. Mr. Ai Zhongfa, president of the company, stated that fresh Cambodian durians are currently being shipped to markets in China and Europe, with particularly high demand from Europe. However, as July is not the peak season for durians, the daily export volume was limited to 30-50 tons, totaling just over 600 tons for the month. He noted that during the peak season, daily exports could exceed 200 tons. This export business is also bringing significant benefits to the local economy. The company currently employs approximately 2,000 workers, many of whom come from Pailin province and neighboring Battambang province (Sampov Loun, Kamrieng, and Phnom Proek districts). The purchase price for durian is 3,800 riels per kilogram (approximately $0.95 USD). The company president expressed gratitude for the support from the Pailin provincial government, emphasizing that legal assistance and labor support are crucial for the smooth operation of the export business. Cambodia's agricultural exports have been expanding in recent years, partly due to strengthened economic cooperation with China. The export of fruits, including durian, is considered an important industry that not only earns foreign currency but also contributes to job creation and income improvement in rural areas.
