Cambodia's Kep Province Promotes Marine Resource Recovery for Sustainable Fisheries and Economic Growth
Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries lauded progress in marine resource conservation projects in Kep Province, urging fishermen to adhere to laws and process aquatic resources for economic revitalization. The increase of rare species has been noted, highlighting the importance of sustainable management.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Dit Tina, stated that the implementation of the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project (SCMF) in Kep Province has led to the recovery of the province's marine resources and ecosystems, resulting in an increased presence of rare species such as dugongs, dolphins, sea turtles, and seahorses. The Minister urged all relevant parties to continue to adhere to conservation laws for marine resources and to process aquatic resources to improve the livelihoods and economy of fishermen. Speaking at the official inauguration ceremony of the Kep Provincial Fisheries Administration building in Kep City, Kep Province on July 9, Minister Dit Tina said that the SCMF project supports the sustainable management and recovery of coastal and marine fisheries resources to improve the livelihoods of fishing communities and protect marine ecosystems. Over the past three years, joint efforts by the government, authorities, technical officials, and partner organizations have resulted in a healthy marine ecosystem in Kep Province with abundant biodiversity, particularly the notable presence of large rare species like dugongs, pink dolphins, sea turtles, and seahorses. Minister Dit Tina added that the establishment of fisheries protected areas and the deployment of artificial reefs are intended to protect long-term interests, not to prohibit or disrupt the fishing activities of citizens. The Minister also urged fishermen to participate in respecting laws, conserving mangrove forests, resources, and biodiversity in coastal areas, shallow waters, and the seabed, strengthening the processing of aquatic resources, and drawing more benefits from the tourism sector in coastal and archipelago areas to improve livelihoods and support the provincial economy, as legal enforcement has begun against fishermen who commit offenses. The SCMF project is being implemented in Kep, Kampot, Koh Kong, and Sihanoukville provinces with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Key objectives include restoring nearshore fish stocks, protecting seagrass and coral reefs, improving fishing landing sites, enhancing the livelihoods of fishing communities, increasing resilience to climate change, and promoting sustainable marine resource management.
