ASEAN Observers Inspect Cambodia-Thailand Border, Verify Situation Near Marker 72

On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 8:37 AM, the Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia announced that the ASEAN Observer Team – Cambodia (AOT-KH), led by its Mission Chief (AOT KH HOM) from the Republic of the Philippines, conducted an inspection to verify and report on the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border at border marker number 72 (the "Unity Marker"). This marker is located in Cham Yaeam Village, Pak Khlong Commune, Mondul Seima District, Koh Kong Province. The inspection was coordinated by the Cambodia Liaison Group (CLG). The objective of this observation mission was to provide the ASEAN observers with a deep, firsthand understanding of the situation at the border marker agreed upon by both Cambodian and Thai sides. It also aimed to demonstrate the stance of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which consistently upholds the peaceful resolution of border issues through discussions and bilateral mechanisms, in accordance with international law, existing bilateral agreements, and the mandate of the Joint Border Commission (JBC). Cambodia maintains its firm position to protect the Cambodia-Thailand international border line inherited from the Indochina-Siam Border Commission. This is done by respecting international legal principles, the principle of intangible borders (Uti Possidetis Juris), the French-Siam Treaty, the Protocol on Border Demarcation, maps resulting from the demarcation work of the Indochina-Siam Border Commission, meeting minutes, border pillar inscription minutes of the Indochina-Siam Border Commission, the 2000 MOU, the 2003 TOR, as well as various other agreements and related documents that both parties have previously agreed upon, in order to resolve conflicts peacefully and achieve lasting peace between the two nations.
