Vietnam's Top Leader Embarks on State Visits to Australia and New Zealand

General Secretary and President To Lam, Vietnam's top leader, has embarked on state visits to Australia and New Zealand. These visits are expected to further strengthen bilateral relations, particularly deepening the "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" with both nations. Vietnam and Australia established diplomatic relations in 1973, subsequently elevating their ties to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2009, an Enhanced Comprehensive Partnership in 2015, and a Strategic Partnership in 2018. Most recently, their relationship was upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024, making this visit a potential opportunity to further materialize this advancement. Meanwhile, Vietnam and New Zealand initiated diplomatic relations in June 1975. Following a Comprehensive Partnership in 2009 and a Strategic Partnership in 2020, their relationship is slated for an upgrade to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in February 2025. This current visit is anticipated to be a significant step towards solidifying this future partnership. The delegation accompanying the top leader includes prominent figures such as the President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Chairman of the Central Commission for Publicity and Education, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, the Minister of Public Security, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee, and the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, underscoring the importance of these visits. In recent years, Vietnam has been actively seeking to strengthen ties with major countries, aiming for economic growth and increased influence on the international stage. Especially amidst its complex relationship with China, deepening cooperation with Western nations like Australia and New Zealand holds a significant place in Vietnam's foreign policy strategy.
