Tragedy in Thailand: 11-Year-Old Boy Steals Truck, Kills 8 Monks

An 11-year-old boy stole a pickup truck from his home and crashed into a group of Buddhist monks on pilgrimage in Thailand's northeastern Mukdahan province on July 2, killing eight monks and injuring 21 others, along with one layperson. According to local police, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Ban Na Wiang Kae village in the Na Sinuan subdistrict, on Mukdahan-Don Tal road. The group of 35 monks and 5 lay followers were walking in single file, following monastic rules for pilgrimages. The first four monks in the procession reportedly saw the swerving vehicle and shouted warnings, allowing five monks to dodge it. However, the sixth monk was struck as the driver allegedly did not see him. Medical teams at Mukdahan Hospital confirmed eight monks died from their injuries, with five pronounced dead at the scene and three succumbing at the hospital. Four monks sustained serious injuries requiring surgery, including ruptured spleens, broken bones, and brain injuries. Ten other monks suffered less severe injuries. The young boy involved in the accident is reportedly in shock and unable to provide a statement. His grandmother told local media that the 11-year-old is a special needs child and had stolen the pickup truck from their home that morning. She stated she did not know his intended destination, and police had attempted to intercept the vehicle. He reportedly drove through a checkpoint at Na Kham Noi, heading towards Mukdahan city, before colliding with the monks. This tragic event raises questions about road safety in Thailand, particularly concerning juvenile drivers and the supervision of children with special needs.
