Vietnam: 11 Sentenced to Death in Airline Crew Drug Smuggling Case

Ho Chi Minh City People's Court has sentenced 11 individuals to death and 19 to life imprisonment in connection with the VN10 drug operation, a large-scale drug smuggling case involving airline crew members. A total of 227 defendants were tried in the case. The court found the defendants to be part of an international drug smuggling network that utilized airline cabin crew to transport large quantities of narcotics, including methamphetamine. Among those sentenced to death were ringleaders and key figures deeply involved in the smuggling activities. Furthermore, three prominent influencers, Chi Dân, An Tây, and Trúc Phương, were convicted for organizing drug use and illegal possession, receiving prison sentences. Their involvement highlights societal concerns regarding drug abuse among young people. This case underscores the severity of organized drug crime in Vietnam. Under the one-party system led by the Communist Party, Vietnam strives to balance social order with economic development. The stringent penalties for drug offenses reflect the government's strong commitment to maintaining security and protecting public health. While Vietnam's economy has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, criminal organizations have also become more active, prompting intensified law enforcement efforts. Given Vietnam's long border with China, the country is particularly vulnerable to drug trafficking routes.
