Cambodia Vows Not to Remain Silent Over Thailand's Unilateral Border Claims

PHNOM PENH, Sept 9, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia will not remain silent or accept what it describes as Thailand’s unilateral actions and territorial claims along the border, government spokesman Pen Bona said Wednesday. Bona stressed that Phnom Penh has actively responded through diplomatic channels and formal protests, rejecting any unilateral map, border line or claim that encroaches on Cambodian territory. “The Cambodian government has never remained silent,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Hun Manet has continued diplomatic efforts to protect sovereignty and maintain peace. He said Cambodia does not recognise any unilateral border line or territorial claim made by Thailand and has insisted that demarcation must be carried out through the Joint Boundary Commission. Cambodia argues that attempts to alter the border through unilateral action or force will not affect its legal position under international law. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a formal protest Tuesday, accusing Thai troops of destroying two Cambodian houses in Banteay Meanchey province on August 31 before building what Phnom Penh alleged was a permanent military structure. Cambodia has also raised concerns at the UN Human Rights Council, saying more than 20,000 civilians remain displaced despite a December 2025 ceasefire. Ambassador Ke Sovann told the 63rd session in Geneva that homes and infrastructure had been destroyed, disrupting livelihoods and education, particularly for women and children. He warned that “peace requires more than the absence of fighting,” urging protection of civilians and their safe return. Bona said Cambodia remains committed to dialogue and peaceful negotiations but will continue to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
