Pattaya Faces Worst Nightmare as Torrential Rain Causes Widespread Flooding

Pattaya is bracing for several difficult days of heavy rain, flooding, and dangerous runoff as torrential downpours continue to inundate the popular tourist city. The latest onslaught of rain, which began late Wednesday night and persisted into Thursday morning, has transformed familiar roads into waterways and left many areas submerged. Water levels reached approximately 50 centimeters on numerous streets, with some flood-prone locations experiencing depths of up to 1 meter. This has significantly disrupted traffic, stranding smaller vehicles and causing extensive backups on major routes. Among the heavily affected areas were Pattaya Third Road, roads near the railway around Khao Noi and Khao Talo, Sukhumvit Road, South Pattaya Road, Central Pattaya Road, Beach Road, Soi Buakhao, and Soi Wat Boon Samphan. The flooding is exacerbated by runoff from higher ground in Pong and Nongprue, which flows into the city's drainage network. This has created strong currents in some areas, intensifying the pressure on already saturated roads. A stark reminder of the dangers occurred early Thursday in the Nern Plab Wan area, where three foreign men were caught in floodwaters near a drainage canal. While two were rescued, a third remains missing as search teams continue their efforts. For motorists, the recurring flooding has become a familiar nightmare. Motorcycles have been overturned, cars stalled after entering deep water, and traffic congestion has gripped several key thoroughfares. In the deepest flooded zones, residents have been forced to wade through chest-high water. The Thailand Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain across several parts of the country from September 24 to 27. The eastern region, including Chonburi province, is specifically identified as an area requiring heightened alert for accumulated rainfall, flash floods, and runoff. While the department has dismissed alarming social media reports of a "mega flood" engulfing Thailand, stating that official forecasts do not support such claims, it has stressed that heavy rainfall and accumulated water pose genuine and significant risks, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. For Pattaya, the coming days will represent another severe test for the city's drainage infrastructure, roads, businesses, and residents. After repeated bouts of intense rain this month, the primary concern is not whether the city can withstand a single downpour, but rather how it will cope with the cumulative impact of recurring storms before its drainage systems and ground can fully recover.
