Vietnam Pledges Solidarity and Active Contribution to World Peace Movement

Vietnam sent representatives to the World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs in 2026, held in Hiroshima from August 2 to 7, reaffirming its solidarity and commitment to the global peace movement. The conference, themed "Together with Hibakusha, building a peaceful, just, nuclear-weapon-free world for the future of humanity and our planet," saw Vietnam underscore its dedication to nuclear disarmament. Representatives from the Vietnam Peace Committee and the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, through their participation, reiterated the Vietnamese people's enduring solidarity and commitment to walk alongside the Japanese and global peace movements in advocating for nuclear disarmament. The conference convened amidst a complex and unpredictable global landscape, marked by escalating strategic competition among major powers and prolonged conflicts, which negatively impact international peace, security, and the progress of nuclear disarmament. Notably, the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) concluded without consensus on a final document, highlighting the growing challenges to global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts. In this context, the World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs holds significant importance in amplifying the voices of peace movements and international people's organizations, fostering dialogue, building trust, and mobilizing broad international support for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons. The conference featured a series of events attended by hundreds of international delegates representing peace movements, trade unions, women's, youth, NGOs, international organizations, and government and local authorities, alongside thousands of participants from across Japan. At the official opening session, Ms. Duong Thi Nga, Vice Secretary-General of the Vietnam Peace Committee, respectfully conveyed a message from General Secretary and President To Lam to the conference organizers. The message was solemnly read to all delegates at the International Conference's opening session and circulated in Japanese and English translations. In his solidarity message, General Secretary and President To Lam highly praised and respectfully acknowledged the organizing committee's over seven-decade effort in advocating for nuclear disarmament, ensuring the voices of Hibakusha were heard. He emphasized the foundational role of the NPT and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), affirming Vietnam's consistent stance and responsible contribution to world peace and nuclear non-proliferation efforts. Furthermore, a congratulatory letter from Mr. Phan Anh Son, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, was respectfully sent to the conference, expressing the deep empathy of the Vietnamese people for the losses suffered by Japanese atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha). It pledged continued solidarity with international peace organizations for a nuclear-weapon-free world and the active dissemination of peace culture to the younger generation. Vietnamese representatives assumed multiple roles at this year's conference, serving as speakers, co-chairs of the International Conference, addressing the plenary opening session, and participating in the working group for drafting the conference's joint declaration, thereby making positive contributions to the success of the event series.
