Cambodia Reaffirms Peaceful Resolution Stance on Border Dispute with Thailand to Canadian Envoy

Cambodia continues to uphold its stance on resolving border disputes with Thailand through peaceful and moderate means, based on international law. This was reiterated by the Acting President of the Senate, Uch Borith, to Christian DesRoches, the Canadian Ambassador to Cambodia. During a working meeting held on the morning of September 2, 2026, at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, Borith informed the Canadian diplomat about Cambodia's firm foreign policy, which places high value on peace, peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and unwavering adherence to international law and historical treaties concerning territorial sovereignty. Beyond the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, the meeting between Borith and the Canadian Ambassador also discussed strengthening Cambodia-Canada relations through expanding bilateral trade and investment, multilateral cooperation, and parliamentary diplomacy, as well as exchanging views on the regional and global security situation. Uch Borith proposed the regular organization of consultations between the parliamentary institutions of both countries. He explained that this is intended to share perspectives and positions on regional and international affairs of mutual interest, with the aim of strengthening the partnership and further enhancing cooperation between the two countries, especially given the rapidly evolving and unpredictable global situation. The Canadian Ambassador agreed with the view on the necessity for middle and small powers to protect the international order based on law and to foster external partnerships. He also highlighted the notable development of the bilateral partnership between Cambodia and Canada, which has become more mature and active in economic, governance, and democratic development. Notably, the Acting President of the Senate also encouraged Canadian businesspeople to consider investing in Cambodia's high-potential sectors, such as modern agriculture and key mineral resources.
