Vietnam Faces Challenges in Science Knowledge Dissemination, Urges Digital Transformation
While Vietnam's science knowledge dissemination efforts are widespread, challenges like fragmentation, one-way communication, and slow digitalization persist. Experts advocate for diverse media and enhanced data infrastructure to navigate the AI and social media era.
In Vietnam, the dissemination of scientific knowledge and innovation is a crucial task for intellectuals, and in recent years, activities in this area have been widely implemented, yielding positive results. However, a more professional and effective approach is needed. Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Head of the Knowledge Dissemination Department at the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), points out that current knowledge dissemination activities are fragmented and lack coordination. In some areas, knowledge transfer tends to be one-way, and the ability to translate specialized knowledge into easily understandable content is limited. Issues such as a shortage of dedicated personnel, limited budgets, and low capacity for investment in modern technology and effective measurement also persist. Furthermore, the new information environment, including generative AI, social media, and content distribution algorithms, while enabling rapid knowledge dissemination, also poses an unprecedented risk of spreading misinformation, false content, and anti-scientific material at an equally high speed. Notably, many organizations, especially VUSTA, possess a wealth of experts and knowledge, but face challenges in data standardization, digitalization, classification, search, sharing, and reuse of content. Shared digital databases and content repositories do not yet match the potential of the system. Mr. Trinh Le Nguyen, Director of the Center for People and Nature, an expert in biodiversity conservation, emphasizes VUSTA's importance as a hub for intellectuals. However, he notes the relatively small number of personnel directly involved in biodiversity conservation and stresses the need to enhance evidence-based communication, presenting nature conservation issues in easily understandable language directly linked to the country's life, economy, and security. Mr. Ho Dinh Luong, Chairman of the Phu Tho Provincial Union of Science and Technology Associations, advocates for shifting from disseminating academic knowledge to providing commercially applicable solutions for local areas. He calls for innovating communication methods and comprehensively digitizing knowledge dissemination activities. Leveraging digital platforms and AI, and strengthening domestic and international knowledge cooperation are crucial for building reliable scientific data sources that aid local research, academic exchange, and practical application. Knowledge dissemination activities must transcend mere information transfer, aiming to foster lifelong learning, scientific literacy, digital literacy, and the adaptive capacity of citizens in the face of rapid technological changes. Dr. Tran Van Tung, Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Information Science and Technology, suggests diversifying communication channels and accelerating the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge through digital platforms, social media, podcasts, and short videos, using plain and understandable language. It is also important to integrate knowledge into production, organize direct knowledge connection programs for rural and remote areas, and support farmers and local businesses in applying technical advancements to their lives. The Vietnam Association for Information Science and Technology, in its capacity and mission, consistently partners with VUSTA to disseminate and spread scientific and technological knowledge, including organizing conferences, workshops, scientific forums, building specialized digital libraries and open knowledge portals, and implementing massive open online courses (MOOCs).
